The Sinhala and Tami New Year that dawns in the month of April is a festival full of cultural value that everyone, big and small, in Srilanka looks forward to. Little children are bundled up in this season with hopes and desires that are completely different from the hopes that arise in the minds of adults. There is no need to explain what hopes are in these little minds. These little children love to dress up with beautiful new clothes in colorful designs and eye catching sandals on the New Year’s Day.
For parents without jobs who were worried about how to provide the next meal for the family, it was just a dream to buy their sons and daughters beautiful clothes and shoes for the New Year.
Mr. Devsiri Hewavidana, who was on vacation in Sri Lanka in March 2024 , had a clear understanding of the serious economic difficulties faced by parents in Kamburupitiya. When he realized that they did not have enough money to buy clothes for their children for the New Year, he discussed the sad situation with Mr. Sirisena, Honorary Chairman of UK Friends of Galle Foundation as to how they could help the poor parents. . Mr. Gamage, then spoke to some well-known businessmen in Kamburupitiya and asked if it would be possible for them to sell clothes to chosen group of children at a huge discount. Hearing this, Anura and Nadi Wickramasinghe, the owners of Simplex, the main designer clothes shop in Kamburupitiya, immediately agreed to his proposal. They kindly agreed to give new clothes to children at a very generous 25% discount . Also, the manager of DSI shoe shop in Kamburupitiya, Mr. Indunil Priyantha said that he and the directors of his company were very willing to participate in such a great meritorious act.
This extra discounts offered by both shops made it possible for UKFG to give New Year gifts to more children than they expected. During the ten days before the Sinhala New Year, with the help of Mr. Ananda Hewavidana and the new scholarship officer Miss Imasha, 60 children with their parents were brought to the Simplex store in small groups. When the children were told to choose any clothes they liked, they felt immense happiness. They walked from one rack to another clothes they fancied with great delight on their faces . Some of the children also bought clothes for their parents and siblings. After that the children were also lucky enough to get the shoes they fancied from Simplex store itself or nearby DSI Shoe shop .
By the time the New Years day arrived ,Mr. Devsiri had bought the children of Ullala, Mapalana, Kahagala, and Massmulla schools, clothes worth 4,33,000 Rupees and shoes worth 1,53,000 Rupees totaling nearly 6 lakhs of Rupees. Mr Devsiri found this generous act of his very rewarding. Watching the smiling faces of children with bags of new clothes outside the Simplex shop was very satisfying for everybody at UKFG .
We express our deep gratitude to Mr. Anura & Nadi Wickramasinghe of Simplex, and their staff including Harshani and to Mr. Indunil Priyantha and Manager and Mrs. Subhani Vasana, staff member of DSI Kamburupitiya Branch, in making this wonderful donation programme a great success.
The value of this noble work of Mr. Devsiri cannot be overstated. It doesn’t have to be said in words. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t know. From the heart of the little child to the adult, there was a great respect and gratitude for him for performing such a priceless service. Where else was there anything other than the happiness of helping each other in human life and the value of this beloved humanity? Mr. Devsiri enjoyed the happiness and satisfaction not everyone could get with money. We pray that he and all his friends at UK Friends of Galle will get the strength to carry out more such noble humanitarian deeds in the future and help the poor children in Kamburupitiya.

සිංහල අලුත් අවුරුද්දට අලුත් ඇඳුම් හා සපත්තු ලැබූ ශිෂ්‍යත්ව දරුවෝ
අප්‍රේල් මාසයේ උදාවන සිංහල හා හින්දු අලුත් අවුරුද්ද ලොකු කුඩා හැම දෙනාම මග බලා හිඳින සංස්කෘතිමය වටිනාකමකින් පිරුණු උත්සවයකි. තුන් හෙළයේ මහා සූර්ය මංගල්‍යයට දුගී පැළයේ ඉඳන් සිටු මාළිගාව දක්වා ජනතාව සැරසෙනුවේ ලහි ලහියේ හිරු කුමරා පිළිගැනීමටය. ලොකු වැඩිහිටි අයගේ හිත්වල ඇතිවන බලාපොරොත්තු වලට හාත්පසින් වෙනස් වූ බලාපොරොත්තු හා ආසා මේ අවුරුදු සමයේ පොදි බැඳගෙන සිටිනුයේ පුංචි ළමයින්ය
මේ පුංචි හිත්වල ඇතිවෙන බලාපොරොත්තු මොනවාදැයි කීමට අමුතුවෙන් අටුවාටීකා අවශ්‍ය නැත. ලස්සන ලස්සන පාට පාට හැඩ වැඩ තියෙන අලුත් ඇඳුම්, අලුත් අලුත් මෝස්තර තියෙන ලස්සන සෙරෙප්පු සපත්තු වලින් අලුත් අවුරුදු කාලේ සැරසීමට මේ පුංචි ළමයින් හරිම ආසය.
දුප්පත් ජනතාවගේ බදු සල්ලි වලින් මාලිගාවල සුඛෝපභෝගී ජීවිත ගත කරන සමහර උදවියගේ ක්‍රියා කලාපයන් නිසා අපේ රටේ රුපියල පහලට වැටී ඩොලරය අහස උසට නැගී රටේ ඇතිවුණු දරුණු ආර්ථික අර්බුදය නිසා බොහෝ දෙමව්පියන් ළඟ මුදල් තිබුනේ නැත. එනිසා බොහෝ දරුවෝ සාප්පු ඉදිරියේ ඩමියන් ට අන්දවා තිබූ ලස්සන වර්ණවත් ඇඳුම් පැළඳුම් දෙස බලමින් ඇස් වල කඳුළු පුරවන් දුකෙන් හිටි අවස්ථා ඕනෑ තරම් දකින්නට ලැබුණි
රැකියා නොමැති බව නිසා තම දරු පවුලට ඊළඟ කෑම වේල සපයන්නේ කෙසේදැයි කියා දුක් වෙමින් සිටින දෙමාපියන්ට තම දූ පුතුන්ට අළුත් අවුරුද්දට ලස්සන ඇඳුම් සපත්තු අරන් දීම හුඳෙක් සිහිනයක් පමණක් විය.
මාර්තු මාසයේ ලංකාවේ නිවාඩුවකට පැමිණ සිටි දෙව්සිරි හේවාවිදාන මහතාට කඹුරුපිටියේ දෙමාපියන් මුහුණ දී සිටි බරපතල ආර්ථික දුෂ්කරතා ගැන පැහැදිලි අවබෝධයක් ලැබිණි. තම දූ දරුවන්ට අලුත් අවුරුද්දට ඇඳුම් අරන් දීමට තරම් වත්කමක් ඔවුන් තුළ නොතිබූ බව දැනගත් ඒ මහතා ඔවුන්ට පිළිසරණක් විය හැකි අන්දම ගැන ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ ගරු සභාපති සිරිසේන මහතා සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කළේය. කඹුරුපිටියේ ප්‍රසිද්ධ ව්‍යාපාරික මහත්වරු කිහිපදෙනෙකුට කතා කළ ගමගේ මහතා සිංහල අදත් අවුරුද්දට තම දරුවන්ට අලුත් ඇඳුම් මිලදී ගැනීමට වත්කම් නොමැති ලද වන දෙමාපියන් කොටසකට පහසු මිලට ඒවා ලබාදිය හැකිදැයි පැවසීය. මේ අසා කඹුරුපිටියේ ප්‍රධාන රෙදිපිළිසැළ වූ Simplex සිම්ප්ලෙක්ස් ආයතනය හිමි අනුර හා නදී වික්‍රමසිංහ යුවල මේ යෝජනාවට එක පයින්ම කැමති විය. 25%ක වට්ටමකට දරුවන්ට අලුත් ඇඳුම් ලබා දීමට එකඟ වීය. එසේම කඹුරුපිටියේ DSI ආයතනය කළමනාකර ඉඳුනිල් මහතා හා ප්‍රකාශ කළ සිටියේ මෙවැනි මහා පින්කමකට සහභාගි වීම තමාටත් තම සමාගමේ අධ්‍යක්ෂකවරුන් ඉතා කැමැත්තෙන් ඉදිරිපත් වන බවයි.
එතුමන්ගේ මෙම කාරුණික අනුග්‍රහය නිසා දෙව්සිරි මහතාට තමා හිතුවාටත් වඩා වැඩි ළමුන් සංඛ්‍යාවකට තමන්ගේ පෞද්ගලික වියදමෙන් තෑගි ලබාදීමට හැකි විය. සිංහල අවුරුද්ද දින ට පෙර පැවැති දින දහය තුල ආනන්ද හේවාවිදාන මහතා හා නව ශිෂ්‍යත්ව නිලධාරිනී ඉමාෂා මෙනවියගේ උදව්වෙන් දරුවන් සුළු සුළු කණ්ඩායම් වශයෙන් සිම්ප්ලෙක් ආයතනයට ගෙන්වන ලද්දේ ඔවුන්ගේ දෙමාපියන් සමඟය. තමන් කැමති කැමති වර්ගයේ ඇඳුම් තෝරා ගන්නා ලෙසින් දරුවන්ට කී විට ඔවුන් තුළ ඇතිවූයේ සතුට අප්‍රමාණය. සාප්පුවටට ගොස් ඇඳුම් තෝරා ගන්නේ පුදුමාකාර ආසාවකිනි. සමහර දරුවෝ තමන්ට වෙන්කොට තිබුණ මුදලින් නංගිලා මල්ලිලාට හා අම්මලා ඇඳුම් මිලදී ගත්තෝය . ඉන්පසු දරුවෝ සිම්ප්ලෙක් ආයතනයෙන් හෝ DSI සපත්තු ආයතනයෙන් තමන්ට අවශ්‍ය සපත්තු ලබාගැනීමට දරුවෝ වාසනාවන්ත වූහ. අවුරුදු දිනය ළඟාවන විට දෙව්සිරි මහතා විසින් උල්ලල,මාපලාන,කහගල,මාස්මුල්ල යන පාසල්වල ළමුන් 60 කට රුපියල් 4,33,000 ක් වටිනා ඇඳුම් හා රුපියල් 1,53,000ක් වටිනා සපත්තු පරිත්‍යා කොට තිබුණි.
එතුමාගේ මේ සුවිශල් කාර්‍යය සාර්ථක කරගැනීමට සහයෝගය දුන් සිම්ප්ලෙක්ස් ආයතනයේ අනුර වික්‍රමසිංහ මහතාට හා එම මැතිනිය හා හර්ශණී ඇතුලු කාර්‍ය මණ්ඩලයටත්, DSI කඹූරුපිටිය ශාඛාවේ කළමණාකාර ඉඳුනිල් ප්‍රියන්ත මහතාට හා සුභානි වාසනා මහත්මියටත් අපි අපේ බලවත් ස්තූතිය පුද කර සිටිමු
ඇත්තටම දෙව්සිරි මහතාගේ මෙම සත්ගුණවත් කාර්යයේ වටිනාකම කොපමණදැයි කියා නිම කළ නොහැකිය. එය වචනයෙන් පැවසිය යුතු නැත. දන්නෝ දනිති. නොදන්නා කෙනෙකු නැතැයි සිත මු. මෙවැනි අමිල වූ සේවාවක් ඉටුකර නඑතුමා පිළිබඳව පුංචි දරුවාගේ හ සිට වැඩිහිටියාගේ හිතේ දක්වා ඇත්තේ ඉතා ගෞරවයකි. ලැබූ මිනිස් දිවියේ එකිනෙකාට උදව් කරමින් ලබා ගන්නා සතුටට වගේම මේ ලැබූ ආදරණීය මනුස්සකමට වටිනාකමක් ලැබීම තරම් වෙන දෙයක් වෙන කොහින්ද? මුදල් වලට ගත නොහැකි හැමෝටම නොලැබෙන ඒ ගෞරවය හා ආදරය දෙව්සිරි මහතා භුක්ති විඳිනුයේ නිහතමානී ආඩම්බරයකිනි. මෙවැනිම වූ උතුම් මානුශික ක්‍රියා තව තවත් සිදුකිරීමට එතුමාටත් එතුමාගේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ සියලු දෙනාටම ශක්තිය ලැබේවායි සහ මෙවැනි කටයුතු මතුවටත් සිදුකිරීමට පින් කුසල් සිත් පහළ වේවායි ප්‍රාර්ථනා කරමු.
