In Sri Lanka, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year — celebrated on the 13th and 14th of April — is a time steeped in tradition, joy, and togetherness. It’s a celebration of fresh beginnings, marked by rituals such as lighting oil lamps, preparing sweetmeats, and playing traditional games with loved ones. One cherished custom, especially for children, is receiving new clothes — a symbol of renewal and prosperity.
However, for many families burdened by poverty, the season is bittersweet. The expectation to provide new clothes for their children, something so simple yet so meaningful, becomes a painful reminder of what they cannot afford. For these families, the joy of the New Year is clouded by hardship and heartbreak.
This year, thanks to the compassion and generosity of our dedicated sponsors — Arthur and Emily, James Adianke, and Mr. Devsiri’s family — UK Friends of Galle (UKFG) was able to provide new clothes to all 72 of our scholarship children across rural communities.
The joy on their faces was indescribable.
For many of these children, it was their very first time wearing brand-new clothes. The pride with which they showed off their outfits, the confidence in their smiles, and the glimmer in their eyes were profoundly moving. Parents who had resigned themselves to disappointment this season were overcome with emotion — their relief and gratitude were palpable. One mother told us, with tears in her eyes, that this gesture had lifted a heavy burden from her heart.
These are not just clothes. They are a gift of dignity, love, and inclusion, letting these children fully partake in the New Year festivities without feeling left behind.
At UKFG, we believe that every child deserves to feel special, especially during a time that celebrates hope and renewal. These small acts of kindness have a lasting impact. They uplift not just individuals, but entire families and communities.

අපේ සංස්කෘතියේ අතිශය වැදගත් කාලයක් වන අප්‍රේල් 13 සහ 14 වන අලුත් අවුරුද්ද පවුල් එකට එකතු වීම, රසවත් කෑම සෑදීම,අලුත් ඇඳුම් ගැනීම ආදියෙන් සමන්විත සුන්දර සමයකි. නමුත්, බොහෝ දුෂ්කරතා මැද ජීවත්වන පවුල් සඳහා, මෙය එතරම් සුන්දර නැත. දරුවෙකුට අලුත් ඇඳුමක් අරන් දිය නොහැකි වෙද්දී ඒ වේදනාව ඇතැම් දරුවන්ට හා දෙමාපියන්ට අවුද්ද පුරාවටම සතුටින් සිටීමට නොහැවීමය හේතුවක් විය හැකියි.
UK Friends of Galle (UKFG) පුන්‍යාතනය ලෙස අපි මේ අවස්ථාවේදී ඒ සන්සුන් සිනහව නැවත ඔවුනට ගෙන ඒමට උත්සාහ ගත්තා. ආදරයෙන් පිරුණු පරිත්‍යාගකරුවන් වන ආර්තර් සහ එමිලි, ජේම්ස් අඩියන්කේ හා හේවාවිදාන පවුලේ උදව්වෙන්, අපිට අපගේ ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ලැබූ දරුවන් 72 දෙනාට අලුත් අවුරුද්ද වෙනුවෙන් අලුත් ඇඳුම් ලබා දිය හැකි වුණා.
දරුවන්ගේ සතුටින් පිරුණු මුහුණු… මව්පියන්ගේ නෙත් පිරුණු ආඩම්බරය… ඒ හැමදේම කියන කතාවක් තියනවා —
කුඩා උදව්වක්, විශාල වෙනසක් හැදුන හැටි!
