Expanding Cricket Beyond Elite Schools – A Call to Empower Rural Sri Lanka
Cricket, once the unifying heartbeat of Sri Lankan society, has increasingly become the preserve of elite urban schools, where resources, facilities, and coaching expertise are concentrated. This exclusivity has created a deep imbalance, denying thousands of talented rural children the chance to develop their sporting potential and represent their country. The time has come to democratize cricket — to take the game beyond the boundaries of Colombo, Kandy, and Galle, and into the heart of our villages and small towns.
Introducing cricket into rural schools would not only diversify the national talent pool but also offer children from disadvantaged backgrounds a transformative pathway out of poverty. Many rural youth possess natural athletic ability, discipline, and resilience born of hard living conditions — qualities that make outstanding sportsmen if given proper training and exposure. By providing cricket pitches, basic gear, and coaching to these schools, we can uncover hidden talent that currently goes unnoticed due to lack of opportunity.
Moreover, the social and educational benefits are profound. Sport teaches teamwork, leadership, and discipline — values that strengthen communities and nurture responsible citizens. The pride of representing one’s school or district can inspire children to remain in education, stay away from drugs and crime, and build ambition for a better life. At a national level, expanding cricket to the rural hinterland will help rebuild a sense of unity and inclusion — proving that excellence in sport is not determined by wealth or postcode, but by passion, hard work, and opportunity.
If cricket is to remain Sri Lanka’s true national game, it must belong to every Sri Lankan child — not just the privileged few.
UK Friends of Galle Brings Big Match Cricket to Rural Kamburupitiya
With the above vision in mind, the UK Friends of Galle (UKFG) decided to take the spirit of big-match cricket to rural Kamburupitiya in southern Sri Lanka. Over the last 21 years, UKFG has spent more than Rs. 200 million uplifting education and facilities in 17 local schools — providing libraries, badminton courts, over 100 computers, projectors, televisions, thousands of books, more than 5,000 pairs of school shoes and state of the art swimming pool that cost 110 Million Rupees . Now, UKFG has turned its attention to introducing the gentleman’s game to the children of Kamburupitiya.
As the first step, the inaugural inter-school Big Match was held between Ullalla Maha Vidyalaya and Mapalana Maha Vidyalaya — a historic milestone for both schools and the entire community. Two thrilling matches — one for boys and one for girls — were played in a festival atmosphere that brought the whole region to life.
UKFG provided complete cricket kits, full uniforms for 50 players, two beautiful Challenge Cups, certificates, match tents, and lunch for all participants. The day began with great ceremony — garlands, school bands, and proud processions led by students carrying the school flags. Distinguished guests including the chairman of local council Mr Morris Wasantha , an old boy of Ullalla School, Mr. Chaminda, Principal of Ullalla Maha Vidyalaya, Mr. Premawantha, retired bank manager, and school principals Mr. Nissanka Abeywickrama and Mr. Samantha Meegahawaththa as well as Mr Devsiri Hewavidana and Mr Ananda Hewavidana graced the occasion. They were warmly welcomed by students and led in a colourful parade to the school grounds by the Mapalana School band.
From the very first ball, excitement filled the air. The crowd — students, parents, and villagers — packed around the field, waving flags, cheering, and dancing to the rhythm of the papare band. It was a carnival of joy, unity, and youthful energy.
The matches were closely contested, filled with passion and sportsmanship. In the end, Mapalana boys lifted the Devsiri P. Hewavidana Challenge Cup, while the Ullalla girls’ team triumphed to win the Sirisena Gamage Trophy after an exhilarating performance that drew loud cheers from the crowd.
When the prize-giving ended, the celebrations continued well into the evening. The children danced, sang, and shared in the spirit of togetherness — already talking eagerly about “next year’s big match.” For many of them, it was the happiest and proudest day of their school life — a day that proved dreams can begin on even the simplest village ground.
Through this remarkable initiative, UKFG has not only revived the game of cricket in rural schools but also rekindled hope, joy, and ambition in the hearts of children who now know that with opportunity, they too can shine on the national stage.
ප්‍රභූ පාසල්වලින් ඔබ්බට ක්‍රිකට් ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීම – ග්‍රාමීය ශ්‍රී ලංකාව බලගැන්වීමේ කැඳවීමක්
ශ්‍රී ලංකා සමාජයේ හෘද ස්පන්දනය වූ ක්‍රිකට්, සම්පත්, පහසුකම් සහ පුහුණු කිරීමේ විශේෂඥතාව සංකේන්ද්‍රණය වී ඇති ප්‍රභූ නාගරික පාසල්වල සංචිතය බවට පත්ව ඇත. මෙම සුවිශේෂීත්වය ගැඹුරු අසමතුලිතතාවයක් ඇති කර ඇති අතර, දහස් ගණනක් දක්ෂ ග්‍රාමීය දරුවන්ට ඔවුන්ගේ ක්‍රීඩා හැකියාවන් වර්ධනය කර ගැනීමට සහ ඔවුන්ගේ රට නියෝජනය කිරීමට අවස්ථාව අහිමි කරයි. ක්‍රිකට් ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රීකරණය කිරීමට කාලය පැමිණ තිබේ – ක්‍රීඩාව කොළඹ, මහනුවර සහ ගාල්ල සීමාවන්ගෙන් ඔබ්බට සහ අපගේ ගම්මාන සහ කුඩා නගරවල හදවතට ගෙන යාමට.
ග්‍රාමීය පාසල්වලට ක්‍රිකට් හඳුන්වා දීමෙන් ජාතික කුසලතා සංචිතය විවිධාංගීකරණය කිරීම පමණක් නොව, අවාසි සහගත පසුබිම්වල දරුවන්ට දරිද්‍රතාවයෙන් මිදීමට පරිවර්තනීය මාවතක් ද ලබා දෙනු ඇත. බොහෝ ග්‍රාමීය තරුණයින්ට ස්වභාවික මලල ක්‍රීඩා හැකියාව, විනය සහ දුෂ්කර ජීවන තත්වයන්ගෙන් උපන් ඔරොත්තු දීමේ හැකියාව ඇත – නිසි පුහුණුවක් සහ නිරාවරණයක් ලබා දෙන්නේ නම් කැපී පෙනෙන ක්‍රීඩකයින් බවට පත් කරන ගුණාංග මෙම පාසල්වලට ක්‍රිකට් පිටි, මූලික ආම්පන්න සහ පුහුණු කිරීම මගින්, අවස්ථා නොමැතිකම හේතුවෙන් දැනට අවධානයට ලක් නොවන සැඟවුණු කුසලතා අපට අනාවරණය කර ගත හැකිය.
එපමණක් නොව, සමාජීය සහ අධ්‍යාපනික ප්‍රතිලාභ ගැඹුරුය. ක්‍රීඩාව, කණ්ඩායම් හැඟීම, නායකත්වය සහ විනය උගන්වයි – ප්‍රජාවන් ශක්තිමත් කරන සහ වගකිවයුතු පුරවැසියන් පෝෂණය කරන වටිනාකම්, තම පාසල හෝ දිස්ත්‍රික්කය නියෝජනය කිරීමේ ආඩම්බරය දරුවන්ට අධ්‍යාපනයේ රැඳී සිටීමට, මත්ද්‍රව්‍ය සහ අපරාධවලින් ඈත් වීමට සහ වඩා හොඳ ජීවිතයක් සඳහා අභිලාෂය ගොඩනඟා ගැනීමට පෙළඹවිය හැකිය. ජාතික මට්ටමින්, ග්‍රාමීය ප්‍රදේශවලට ක්‍රිකට් ව්‍යාප්ත කිරීම, එකමුතුකම සහ ඇතුළත් කිරීමේ හැඟීමක් නැවත ගොඩනඟා ගැනීමට උපකාරී වනු ඇත – ක්‍රීඩාවේ විශිෂ්ටත්වය තීරණය වන්නේ ධනය හෝ තැපැල් කේතය අනුව නොව, ආශාව, වෙහෙස මහන්සි වී වැඩ කිරීම සහ අවස්ථාව අනුව බව ඔප්පු කරයි.
ක්‍රිකට් ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සැබෑ ජාතික ක්‍රීඩාව ලෙස පැවතීමට නම්, එය සෑම ශ්‍රී ලාංකික දරුවෙකුටම අයිති විය යුතුය – වරප්‍රසාද ලත් කිහිප දෙනෙකුට පමණක් නොවේ.

එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම මහා තරඟ ක්‍රිකට් ග්‍රාමීය කඹුරුපිටියට ගෙන එයි.
නගරයේ දරුවන් භුක්ති විදින ක්‍රිකට් හා අනෙකුත් ක්‍රීඩා වල යෙදීමට ගම්බද දරුවන්ටත් අවස්ථාව සලසා දිය යුතුය යන සංකල්පය යටතේ දැක්ම මනසේ තබාගෙන, එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම (UKFG) මහා තරඟ ක්‍රිකට් සංකල්පය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ග්‍රාමීය කඹුරුපිටියට ගෙන යාමට තීරණය කළේය . පසුගිය වසර 20 තුළ, මෙම පදනම විසින් කඹුරුපිටියේ ප්‍රාදේශීය පාසල් 17 කට අධ්‍යාපනය පහසුකම් සඳහා පුස්තකාල 7 ක්, බැඩ්මින්ටන් පිටි 5ක්, පරිගණක 100 කට අධික ප්‍රමාණයක්, ප්‍රොජෙක්ටර්, රූපවාහිනී, පොත් දහස් ගණනක් සහ පාසල් දරුවන්ට නව සපත්තු යුගල 5,000 කට අධික ප්‍රමාණයක් හා රුපියල් ලක්ශ 110ක් වටිනා අංග සම්පූර්ණ පිහිනුම් තටාකයක් ලබා දී ඇත.
ඉන් නොනැවතුණු එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම කඹුරුපිටියේ දරුවන්ටත් මහත්වරුන්ගේ ක්‍රීඩාව හඳුන්වා දිය යුතු යයි තීරණයය කළේය.
එහි පළමු පියවර ලෙස, උල්ලල මහා විද්‍යාලය සහ මාපලාන මහා විද්‍යාලය අතර සමාරම්භක අන්තර් පාසල් මහා තරගය 2025 ඔක් 24 දා උල්ලල පාසැල් පිට්ටනියේදී මහත් උත්සවකාරයෙන් පැවැත්විණි. පාසල් දෙකටම පමණක් නොව සමස්ත ප්‍රජාවටම ඓතිහාසික සන්ධිස්ථානයක් වීය. පිරිමි ළමයින් සඳහා එකක් සහ ගැහැණු ළමයින් සඳහා එකක් වශයෙන් පැවැත්වුණු මෙම ක්‍රිකට්තරඟ සැණකෙළිය මුළු කලාපයම ජීවය ගෙන ආ වර්ණවත් අවස්ථාවක් විය.
ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම විසින් ක්‍රීඩකයින් 50 දෙනෙකු සඳහා සම්පූර්ණ නිල ඇඳුම්, පාවහන්, අලංකාර අභියෝගතා කුසලාන දෙකක්, විශේෂ දක්ෂතා කුසලාන පහක්, සහතිකපත්, තරඟ කූඩාරම් සහ සියලුම සහභාගිවන්නන් සඳහා දිවා ආහාරය ලබා දෙන ලදී.
මේ ක්‍රිකට් සැණකෙළිය ආරම්භ වූයේ මල්මාලා, පාසල් තූර්ය වාදක කණ්ඩායම් සහ පාසල් ධජ රැගෙන යන සිසුන් විසින් මෙහෙයවන ලද ආඩම්බර පෙරහැරක් සමඟිනි. උල්ලල පාසලේ ආදි ශිෂ්‍ය කඹුරුපිටිය ප්‍රාදේශීය සභාපති මොරිස් වසන්ත මහතා, කඹුරුපිටිය මහා විද්‍යාලයේ විදුහල්පති චාමින්ද ලියනාරච්චි මහතා, විශ්‍රාමික බැංකු කළමනාකරු ප්‍රේමවන්ත මහතා සහ පාසල් දෙකේ විදුහල්පතිවරුන් වන නිශ්ශංක අබේවික්‍රම මහතා සමන්ත මීගහවත්ත මහතා හා දෙව්සිරි හා ආනන්ද හේවාවිදාන මහත්වරු ඇතුළු සම්භාවනීය අමුත්තන් මෙම අවස්ථාවට සහභාගී වූහ. සිසුන් විසින් ඔවුන් උණුසුම් ලෙස පිළිගත් අතර මාපලාන පාසල් තූර්ය වාදක කණ්ඩායම විසින් එතුමන්ලා තරග භූමියට වර්ණවත් පෙළපාලියකින් ගෙන යන ලදී.
පළමු පන්දුවේ සිටම තරඟය උද්යෝගයෙන් පිරී ගියේය. සිසුන්, දෙමාපියන් සහ ගම්වැසියන් සමූහය පිටිය වටා රැස්ව කොඩි ලෙලවමින්, ඔල්වරසන් දෙමින් සහ පපරේ තූර්ය වාදක කණ්ඩායමේ රිද්මයට නටමින් සිටියහ. එය ප්‍රීතිය, එකමුතුකම සහ තරුණ ජවයේ සැණකෙළියක් විය.
මුලින්ම බාලිකා පිල් දෙක හා දෙවනුව බාලක කණ්ඩායම් දැඩි ලෙස තරඟ වැදුණු අතර, ඔවුන් තුල උද්‍යෝගයයෙ හා ක්‍රීඩාශීලීත්ව මැනවින් පිළිබිඹු වූයේය
අවසානයේ, තියුණු සටනකින් පසු මාපලාන පිරිමි කණ්ඩායම දෙව්සිරි පී. හේවාවිදාන අභියෝග කුසලානය ජය ගත් අතර, උල්ලල්ල බාලිකා කණ්ඩායම ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින්ගෙන් ප්‍රීති ඝෝෂා මැද සිරිසේන ගමගේ කුසලානය දිනා ගත්හ.
ත්‍යාග ප්‍රදානෝත්සවයෙන් පසු ජයග්‍රාහක පිල් වලින් කුසලානය ඔසවාගෙන ජය ඝෝෂා නගමින් පිට්ටනිය වටේ දිිව්වේ ක්‍රීඩා ලෝලයින්ගේ අත්පොළ සන් නාදය මැද්දේය.
සවස් වන තුරුම පාසැල් දෙකේම දරුවෝ එකම පවුලේ සහෝදර සහෝදරියන් මෙන් එකමුතුව ඩීජේ සංගීතයට අනුව නටමින් හා ගී ගයමින් තමන්ගේ සතුට බෙදා ගත්හ.
මේ දරුවන් බොහෝ දෙනෙකුට, මෙම ඓතිහාසික ක්‍රිකට් සැණකෙළිය ඔවුන්ගේ පාසල් ජීවිතයේ ප්‍රීතිමත්ම සහ ආඩම්බරම දිනය විය .
මේ උත්සවය සරලම ගමේ භූමියේ පවා සිහින ආරම්භ කළ හැකි බව ඔප්පු කළ දිනයක් වීය.
මෙම කැපී පෙනෙන මුලපිරීම හරහා දෙව්සිරි පී. හේවාවිදාන මහතා ප්‍රමුඛ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ සියලු දෙනාම කඹුරුපිටියේ ග්‍රාමීය පාසල්වල ක්‍රිකට් ක්‍රීඩාව නැවත පණ ගැන්වූවා පමණක් නොව, මතු දිනක ජාතික ක්‍රීඩා වේදිකාවේ බැබළෙන්නට තමන්ටත් හැකි බවට මේ සුන්දර ගම්බද දරුවන්ගේ හදවත් තුළ බලාපොරොත්තුව, ප්‍රීතිය සහ අභිලාෂය ද ඇති කරලීය.

Several decades ago, when the sun first rose upon the village of Ullala in Srilanka , a golden chapter was written in its history. On that day, as all challenges faded away like dew before the sun, the foundation for a new school in Ullala was laid. From that small beginning emerged a generation of great individuals who illuminated the nation—fulfilling the noble dream of a courageous and loving visionary, Mr. D. C. Hewavidana.
On October 24, 2025, yet another golden page was added to the history of Ullala Vidyalaya. What was once a game limited to cities was brought to the village children, turning them into heroes at the national level. The one who made this possible, Mr. Devsiri P. Hewavidana son of Mr D C Hewavidana did so out of love and devotion to the nation.
The boys and girls of Ullala Maha Vidyalaya and Mapalana Vidyalaya united in brotherhood to begin the Blue and Red Battle, held in honor of the heroism of Sirisena Gamage and Devsiri Hewavidana. This historic cricket encounter brought immense joy to everyone.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Samantha Meegahawatta, the esteemed Principal of Mapalana Vidyalaya, and all others who made it possible to witness such a proud and memorable event. Likewise, our thanks go to Mr. Nishshanka Abeywickrama, the honorable Principal of Ullala Maha Vidyalaya, and his team for their praiseworthy hospitality.
We also remember with appreciation all members of the UK Friends of Galle foundation , along with Mr. Devsiri Hewavidana and Mrs. Ruvini Hewavidana, whose kindness and generosity continue to bless the children.
May your noble intentions, Mr. Devsiri Hewavidana, bring success and courage to every child until the Blue and Red Battle shines brightly once again.

මීට දශක කිහිපයකට ඉහත උල්ලල ගම්මානයට හිරු උදා වූයේ ඉතිහාසයට රන් අකුරින් ලියවෙන පිටුවක් එක් කරමිනි. එදා සියලු අභියෝග හිරු දුටු පිනි මෙන් වියැකී යද්දී උල්ලලට පාසලක් ආරම්භ කිරීමේ මුල් අඩිතාලම වැටුනි. එදා ආරම්භ වූ පුංචි පාසලෙන් රට බබලවන මහා වියතුන් පිරිසක් බිහි වූයේ D.C හේවාවිදාන නම් නිර්භීත ආදරණීය යුග පුරුෂයා ගේ හීන සැබෑ කරමිනි.
2025.10.24 දින උල්ලල විද්‍යාලයේ ඉතිහාසයට නැවත රන් අකුරින් ලියවෙන පිටුවක් එක් විය. නගරයට සීමා වූ මහත්වරුන්ගේ ක්‍රීඩාව ගමේ දරුවන් වීරයන් කරන්නට ජාතික තලයට උවත් ඔවුන් සුදුස්සන් බව ලොවට කියන්නට දෙව්සිරි පී හේවාවිදාන නම් මේ අපූරු නිර්මාණශීලී මිනිසාට සිත් වූයේ ජාතියේ පිනටය.
උල්ලල මහා විද්‍යාලය හා මාපලාන විද්‍යාලයේ බාලක බාලිකාවන් සිරිසේන ගමගේ ශූරතාවය හා දෙව්සිරි හේවාවිදාන ශූරතාවය සදහා සහෝදරත්වයෙන් නිල් රතු සටන ආරම්භ වීම සැමගේ අමන්දානන්දයට හේතු විය. මෙවන් ඓතිහාසික ක්‍රිකට් තරගයක් අභිමානවත් ලෙස ඇසින් දකින්නට ශක්තිය ලබා දුන් මාපලාන විද්‍යාලයේ ගරු විදුහල්පති සමන්ත මීගහවත්ත මහතා ඇතුලු සියලු දෙනාටත් උල්ලල මහා විද්‍යාලයේ ගරු විදුහල්පති නිශ්ශංක අබේවික්‍රම මහතා ඇතුලු සියලු දෙනාටත් ස්තූතිවන්ත වෙමු. එමෙන්ම ප්‍රශංසනීය වූ සත්කාරකත්වයටද ස්තූතීයි. එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ සියලු දෙනාටම සිහිපත් කරමින් දෙව්සිරි හේවාවිදාන මැතිතුමා හා රුවිනි හේවාවිදාන මැතිනිය ඇතුලු සදාදරණීයයන් සිහිපත් කරමින්
