It is the Sri Lankan culture to celebrate the dawning of a New Year, traditionally looking forward to the month of April. It is somewhat similar to Celebrating Christmas in the UK. All extended families get together, wearing colourful new clothes, exchanging gifts, playing various indoor games and then sitting down for a sumptuous meal at a given auspicious time, when this New Year event arrives.
Unfortunately, over the last few years, mainly due to Covid-19 pandemic and also to an unprecedent economic crisis, people were forced to join long queues for basic necessities like gas, fuel, bread and other essential food items. Nobody could afford to celebrate the New year as they used to in the past. Year 2023 was no different: although there was no shortage of commodities, the price of many essential items went sky-rocketing. Scores of poor parents were miserable that they did not have enough money to buy new clothes for their children or have an enjoyable New Year Lunch with their extended families.
Realising these impediments that families faced, UKFG decided to accord its Scholarship Recipients’ families a package each, containing 10kg of Rice, 10 Coconuts and dry rations . They also doubled their monthly scholarship money from hitherto paid 5,000 to 10,000 Sri Lankan Rupees.
On 12th April 2023 – two days before the Srilankan New Year, UKFG invited all the Scholarship recipients and their parents to the residence of Mr. Ananda & Mrs. Dhammi Hewavidana. Mr. Devsiri Hewavidana accompanied by the principal of Mapalana School Mr. Saman Meegahawaththa and the principal of Ullla school-Mr. Nissanka Abeywickrama gave away the food stuff and money to the scholars’ parents. Consequently, they had told the UKFG that those families were able to have a very enjoyable New Year Celebration.

ශිෂ්‍යත්වලාභීන්ට සිංහල අවුරුද්දට තෑගි මල්ලක්
එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ අප නිරන්තරයෙන් අප පදනම මඟින් ආධාර උපකාර ලබා ගන්නා දරුවන්ගේ අවශ්‍යතාවන් පිළිබඳව අවදානයෙන් සිටින්නෙමු.
වර්තමාන ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පවතින ආර්ථික අර්බුදයත් සමග අවුරුද්ද සැමරීම කෙසේ වෙතත් අවුරුදු චාරිත්‍ර කිරීමට අවශ්‍ය ආහාර පවා ලබා ගැනීමට අපහසු තත්වයක් සෑම නිවසකටම මහත් ගැටලුවකි. එම තත්වය මනාව අවබෝ ධ කර ගත් අප පදනම විසින් ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ලබා දෙන දරුවන්ට පමනක් නොව කඹුරුපිටිය ප්‍රදේශයේ ආර්ථික අපහසුතා ඇති දරුවන් 50 කට ආසන්න පිරිසකට මාසික ශිෂ්‍යත්ව මුදලට අමතරව හාල් කිලෝ 10ක් පොල් ගෙඩි 10ක්, වියළි ආහාර සහ රු.10000 ක මුදලක් පරිත්‍යාග කරන ලදී.
අප්‍රේල් 12 වන දින මෙම වියළි ආහාර සහ මුදල් ලබා දීමට සියලු කටයුතු දෙව්සිරි සහ ලක්සිරි මහත්වරුන් විසින් කල් ඇතුව සුදානම් කර තිබූ අතර ලක්සිරි මහතා කිසිවකු නොසිතූ ලෙස අසනීප වී මෙම පරිත්‍යාගය සිදු කල දිනයේදීම අප අතරින් සමු ගත්තේය.එතුමා ලෙඩ වී සිටියදීත් “කඹුරුපිටියේ දරුවන්ට හාල් පොල් ලබා දෙන්න” යැයි දෙව්සිරි මහතාට නිරන්තරයෙන් පවසා ඇති බවද මෙහි විශේෂයෙන් සඳහන් කල යුතුය.
අවුරුදු සැමරීමට තරම් ආර්ථික පහසුතාවයක් නොතිබූ අහිංසක දරුවන් මෙම වියළි ආහාර සහ මුදල් රැගෙන එයින් අලුත් ඇඳුම් මිලට ගෙන අවුරුදු සැමරීමට පිටත් වුයේ ලක්සිරි මහතාට ඉක්මන් සුවයද පතමින් ය.
කඹුරුපිටිය ආනන්ද හේවාවිදාන මහතාගේ නිවසේ දී බඩු මලු ලබා ගැනීමෙන් සතුටට පත් දරුවන්ගේ ඡායාරූප සමූහයක් පහතින් දැක්වේ.
