Mr. and Mrs. Devsiri Hewavidana from London joined British friends in the United Kingdom to continue with the huge charity work carried out by his father ,the late Justice of the Peace, Mr D.C. Hewavidana who was a famous Buddhist philanthropist in the areas of Galle Matara Kamburupitiya.
Immediately after the tsunami tragedy, Mr Devsiri founded the charity Organization called UK friends of Galle. Devsiri and his wife Ruvini have been helping children in 17 schools in Imaduwa and Kamburupitiya area for 21 years through their foundation.
At a time when the people are in a severe financial crisis due to economic difficulties, disasters and other difficulties, a great gift of giving a bag of goods worth 10,000 rupees to a large number of families recently happened. The first stage of this donation was to give a bag of valuable goods to Vitiala Maha Vidyalaya. Devsiri and Ruvini Hewavidana, Mr. Ananda Hewavidana and Mrs. Ruvini’s brother Mr. Didul Gamage also participated in this devotional service, which was made possible by the donation of £1300 by Mrs Nicky Pharoah and Mr Mark Miller from England, who were philanthropists of the UKFG. Mr. Devsiri, deeply moved by this beneficence, decided to provide similar assistance to the children studying at Ullala Maha Vidyalaya, founded by his late father Mr D.C. Hewavidana. His wife Mrs. Ruvini gave lot of support to carry out this act at their personal expense of 21 lakh rupees.
The bag donated to the parents contained a large amount of essential items such as rice, coconut, lentils, sugar, potatoes, yams, salmon, dried fruit, milk, tea, chocolate biscuits, marshmallows, soap, toothpaste, etc. In recent times, we have not heard of a government or private local or foreign organization donating such a large number of valuable items for school children or poor families. Although there are people who come forward to do this kind of work in foreign countries, there are hardly any people who come forward to do this kind of work at their own expense in our country. But the Hewavidana couple did not hesitate to do this great charity at their own expense because they love the Ullala children very much.
After coming to the school, Mr. Devsiri had a chat with the college principal and told the principal about the matter in his mind. The principal was very happy to hear that and the school made the necessary arrangements for his work to be done successfully. Having made all the arrangements in a very short time, Mr. Devsiri came to Ullala School on November 6, 2023 with his cousins Mr. Premawantha Abeysiriwardhana former manager of NSB Bank and Mr. Ananda Hewavidana . The special guests were warmly welcomed by the children of the school with bouquets of flowers and betel leaves.
The guests were escorted to the ceremony, which was organized in a very beautiful and elegant manner, amid the smiles and applause of the school children. Parents also joined in this event which was organized with beautiful dances and songs by the little children.
Addressing the gathering , Honorable Principal Mr. Nishanka Abeyawickrama pointed out the value of this act of Mr. Devsiri, which was performed at a time when the people of the village were suffering from great difficulties. He further said that Mr Devsiri’s act was priceless. In the past 21 years, Mr. Devsiri described a little of the great service rendered to Ullala Maha Vidyalaya personally and by his friends in England in general.
After that, the school children, teachers and parents who addressed the assembly thanked Mr & Mrs Devsiri profoundly . They see Mr. Devsiri as a saint living on earth.The happiness of the parents was translated into words amidst the tears of joy.
In reply, Mr. Devsiri spoke a few words and stated that the happiness of Ullala children and parents was his own happiness too. He said that he was making the donations as a tribute to his deceased parents and his beloved brother Laksiri Hewavidana who passed away suddenly in April 2023.
Mr Devsiri reiterated that he did not have any hidden goals such as canvassing for votes to become local MP, getting Honours or titles from the government or seeking fame. His only expectation was for Ullala Children to use all the help offered by his UK Friends of Galle Foundation, get a good education, obtain university degree and serve his country and village.
After the spectacular dances and songs by the Ullala children, the distribution of food bags was started by the School principal. .
The parents accepted the food bags with overwhelming happiness. The 23KG bag was too heavy for many parents to carry. After receiving the highly valuable items , the children and parents did not forget to thank Mr Devsiri once again for his invaluable service. The joy in the hearts of Mr. Devsiri Hewavidana, Mr. Prewantha Abayasiriwardana and Mr. Ananda Hewavidana was indescribable when they saw the parents who were happy to receive a bag of 10,000 rupees. It was a very rewarding occasion for them.
The valuable help given to about 300 needy families who were suffering from severe financial difficulties to the extent that they cannot provide their children with daily meals was like a gift from God.
Many people did not know that Mr. Devsiri who loves his native country and village, , together with his friends from the Galle Friends Foundation had been doing a great service for the needy children in Imaduwa and Kamburupitiya areas for the past 21 years . For the people in the areas where he helps, he is a true public servant.
There are very few words in the dictionary to say about people like Mr Devsiri who performed such valuable deeds. There is great happiness in everyone’s hearts as well as an indescribable feeling of gratitude that he has done many good deeds.
May he and his London friends get the strength and courage to carry out such invaluable service to poor children for many years to come .

රුපියල් ලක්ෂ 21ක තම පෞද්ගලික වියදමින් මේ සත්ක්රියාව සිදුකිරීමට එතුමාගේ බිරිඳ රුවිනි මැතිනියගෙන් ලැබුණේ නොමද සහයෝගයකි .
දෙමව්පියන්ට පරිත්යාග කළ මෙම බඩු මල්ලෙහි හාල්,පොල්,පරිප්පු, සීනී,අල, රටළූණු, සැමන්,කරවල‚ පිටිකිරි, තේකොල, චොකලට් බිස්කට්, මාස් මෙලෝස්, සබන් ‚ දත්බෙහෙත්, වැනි අත්යාවශ්ය ද්රව්ය විශාල ප්රමාණයක් අඩංගු වී තිබුණි. මෑත කාලය තුළදී රජයේ හෝ පෞද්ගලික දේශීය හෝ විදේශීය ආයතනයකින් මෙතරම් වටිනා විශාල බඩු සංඛ්යාවක් පාසල් දරුවන් වෙනුවෙන් හෝ දුප්පත් පවුල් වෙනුවෙන් පරිත්යාග කළ බවක් අප අසා නැත. විදේශීය රටවල මෙවැනි කටයුතු කිරීමට පුද්ගලයන් ඉදිරිපත් වුවද අප රට තුළ තම පෞද්ගලික වියදමින් මෙවැනි ක්රියාවක් සිදු කිරීමට ඉදිරිපත් වන පුද්ගලයින් නොමැති තරම්ය.
නමුත් දෙව්සිරි හේවාවිදාන යුවළ තම පෞද්ගලික වියදමින් මේ මහා පින්කම සිදුකිරීමට පසුබට නොවූයේ උල්ලල දරුවන්ට ඔවුන් බෙහෙවින් ආදරය කරන නිසාය.
පාසලට පැමිනි දෙව්සිරි මහතා එම විද්යාලීය විදුහල්පතිතුමා සමග කතාබස්කොට තම සිතේ ඇති කටයුත්ත පිළිබදව විදුහල්පතිතුමාට පැවසීය. එය ඇසීමෙන් ඉමහත් සතුටට පත් වූ විදුහල්පතිතුමා එතුමාගේ කටයුත්ත සාර්ථකව සිදුකරගැනීමට පාසල මගින් සිදුවිය යුතු කටයුතු සිදුකරන ලදී. ඉතාමත් කෙටි කාලයක් තුල සියලු කටයුතු සකස් කරගත් දෙව්සිරි මහතා 2023 නොවැම්බර් 6 වැනිදා උල්ලල පාසලට පැමිණියේ තම ඥාති සොහොයුරන් වන NSB බැංකුවේ හිටපු කළමණාකාරතුමකු වූ ප්රේමවන්ත අබේසිරිවර්ධන මහතා හා ආනන්ද හේවාවිදාන මහතා සමගය. පාසලේ දරුවන් විසින් මල් පොකුරු හා බුලත් අත් පිරිනමමින් විශේෂ අමුත්තන් ඉතා ආදරයෙන් පිළිගන්නා ලදී.
ඉතාමත් අලංකාරව සහ චාම් ලෙස සංවිධානය කරතිබූ එම උත්සවයට ඔවුන් පැමිණියේ පාසල් දරුවන්ගේ සිනාපොදි හා අත්පොළසන් මැද්දේය. අලංකාර නැටුම් ගැයුම් කතා වලින් සංවිධානය කරතිබූ මෙම උත්සවයට දෙමාපියන් ද එක් වී සිටියේ ඉමහත් ප්රමෝදයකිනි.
උත්සවය ඇමතූ ගරු විදුහල්පති නිශ්ශංක අභයවික්රම මැතිතුමා ගමේ ජනතාව බලවත් දුෂ්කරතාවයෙන් පෙළෙමින් සිටින අවධියක ඉටුකරන ලද දෙව්සිරි මහතාගේ මෙම සත්ක්රියාවේ වටිනාකම මිළ කල නොහැකි බව පෙන්වා දුන්නේය. පසුගිය වසර 21 තුළ දෙව්සිරි මහතා පෞද්ගලිකවත් එතුමාගේ එංගලන්තයේ මිතුරන් පොදුවේත් උල්ලල මහා විද්යාලයට කරන ලද මහඟු සේවයෙන් බිඳක් විස්තර කළ එතුමා එවැනි ඉහළම පෙළේ උපකාර ලැබූ හා ඉදිරියේදීත් ලබන උල්ලල විදුහල් දරුවන් ඉතාම වාසනාවන්ත බවද පැවසීය.
ඉන් අනතුරුව සභාව ඇමතු පාසල් දරුවන්ද ,ගුරුවරුන්ද , දෙමාපියන්ද එතුමාට බෙහෙවින් ස්තුති කළෝය. දෙමාපියන්ගේ සතුට වචන වලට පෙරලුණේ ඔවුන්ගේ ඇස් වලින් වැටෙන සතුටු කඳුළු මැද්දේය. ඔවුන් දෙව්සිරි මහතාව දකිනුයේ මිහිපිට ජීවත් වන දෙවිකෙනෙකු ලෙසය.
පිළිතුරු වශයෙන් වචන ස්වල්පයක් කතාකළ දෙව්සිරි මහතා ප්රකාශ කළේ උල්ලල දරුවන්ගේ හා දෙමව්පියන්ගේ සතුට තමන්ගේ සතුට බවයි. තමා මේ දන් පින්කම් කරන්නේ තම මියගිය දෙමාපියන් හා 2023 වසරේ හදිසියේ අභාවප්රාප්ත වූ ලක්සිරි හේවාවිදාන නම් තම ආදරණීය සොහොයුරාට පින් පැමිණවීම සඳහා බව එතුමා මුලින්ම ප්රකාශ කළේය.
ඡන්දය ඉල්ලීම, රජයෙන් නම්බු නාම ලබා ගැනීම හෝ ප්රසිද්ධිය කරා ගමන් කිරීම වැනි සැඟවුණු පුහු අරමුණු තමාට නැති බව කී ඒ මහතා තමන්ගේ එකම අපේක්ෂාව උල්ලල විදුහලේ දරුවන් ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ උදව් වලින් සම්පූර්ණ ප්රයෝජනය ලබාගෙන හොඳට අධ්යාපනය හදාරා, සරසවි උපාධි ලබා තම රටට හා ගමට සේවය කරනවා දැකීම පමණක් බවද පැහැදිළි කළේය.
උල්ලල දරුවන්ගේ දර්ශනීය නැටුම් ගැයුම් වලින් අනතුරුව බඩු මලු ලබාදීමේ කටයුත්ත ආරම්භ කෙරුණි.
කියාගත නොහැකි සතුටකින් තම දෝතින් ලබාගත් කි. ග්රෑම් 23 නේ බඩු මල්ල දෙමාපියන් ට උසුලා ගත නොහැකි තරම් බරින් අධික වීය. බඩුමලු ලබාගැනීමෙන් අනතුරුව දරුවන්ද දෙමාපියන් ද එතුමා සිදුකල අමිල සේවයට තුති පිදීමට නැවත වරක් අමතක නොකළ අතර ඔවුන් බඩු මල්ල තම නිවසට රැගෙන ගියේද දෙව්සිරි මහතාට පිං දෙමින් ය. රු 10,000කබඩු මල්ලක් ලබාගෙන සතුටු වූ දෙමාපියන් දකින විට දෙව්සිරි හේවාවිදාන මහතා, ප්රේමවන්ත අභයසිරිවර්ධන හා ආනන්ද හේවාවිදාන යන මහත්වරුන්ගේ හිත්වල ඇති වූ ප්රීතිය මිළකල නොහැකි වීය
දරුවන්ට එදිනෙදා ආහාරවේල සපූරා දීමට බැරි තරමේ ආර්ථික අපහසුතාවයෙන් පෙළෙන 300ක් පමණ වූ අසරණ පවුල් වලට මේ කරනලද වටිනා උපකාරය දෙවියන්ගෙන් ලැබුණු දායාදයක් මෙන් වීය.
නමුත් උපන් රටට ගමට ආදරය කරන දෙව්සිරි මැතිතුමා පසුගිය වසර 21තිස්සේ තම ගාලු මිතුරු පදනමේ මිතුරන් සමඟ එක්වී ඉමදුව හා කඹුරුපිටිය ප්රදේශවල අසරණ දරුවන් සඳහා අප්රසිද්ධියේ විශාල සේවයක් කරමින් සිටින බව බොහෝ දෙනෙකු නොදන්නා කරුණක් විය. එතුමා උපකාර කරන ප්රදේශවල සිටින ජනතාවට නම් එතුමා සැබෑ ජනතා සේවකයෙකි.
මෙවැනි වටිනා ක්රියාවන් සිදු කළ එතුමා පිළිබඳව පැවසීමට ශබ්දකෝෂයේ වචන ඉතා අල්පය. වෙනත් කිසිදු පුද්ගලයකු විසින් නොකරන මෙවැනි සත් ක්රියාවක් එතුමා විසින් සිදුකිරීම පිළිබඳව සියලුදෙනාගේම හදවත් තුල ඇත්තේ විශාල සතුටක් මෙන්ම කියා නිම කළ නොහැකි කෘතවේදී හැඟීමකි.
