It is hard to believe that UK FRIENDS of Galle is 20 years old. It was founded by Mr. Devsiri and Mr. Sirisena Gamage in 2003, in order to help poor children in Kamburupitiya area. The first lucky and bright child who received a scholarship from UKFG was G. L. Roshini Kumari at Ullala school. When Tsunami devastated Sri Lanka, we were the first to start relief work at Mr. Devsiri’s home town – Galle. We offered many Tsunami-affected children scholrships and also built seven Tsunami homes in Galle, for displaced families.
When Galle was getting so much help with Tsunami reconstruction work, we moved back to Kamburupitiya and resumed our help for the children in that area. Over the last 20 years we have given scholarships to 330 children. We have donated 5 new School Libraries with thousands of new books and 5 Badminton Courts. We have also given away about 30 computers, printers, projectors, laptops and 2500 pairs of new shoes to the children. Our biggest donation so far is the Helen Carson Swimming pool at Sapugoda Rathanapala school, built at a cost of 110 lakhs of Rupees.
UKFG celebrated its 20th anniversary at Sirini Walawwa Hotel Kamburupitiya on 30th March 2023, all our current scholarship recipients with their parents and all the local school principals in the area gathered there for lunch to be followed by a meeting. It was a pleasure to see some of our original scholarship winners in 2003/2005 who were now Doctors, Engineers, Businessmen, Accountants and Army and Navy personnel coming to say “Thank You” to UKFG. Among them was our first ever scholarship recipient, G. L. Rohini Kumamri who is the Current Gramasewaka (Lady Village Head) in one area of Kamburupitiya region. It was so heart-warming to see all of the old scholarship recipients had become leading characters of the region, useful to the society, meeting Hewavidana and Gamage family members and express their utmost gratitude for helping them to have a good education, despite their financial implications.
After a sumptuous lunch, a meeting took place: most of the Scholarship winners sang beautiful songs, performed traditional/cultural dances to entertain the gathering. Mr. Abeywickrama, Ullal school Principal in his speech described how his school had benefitted enormously from the generosity shown by the philanthropists in UKFG. He further explained that it had not only helped his school, but 16 other schools in the area that received numerous donations from UKFG and all of them were very grateful. He earnestly wished that UKFG would continue to help the schools for many more years to come.
The guests numbering over 350 left for their homes, reliving many happy memories after four hours of singing, dancing and speeches of sincere gratitude to the UKFG.

ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම 20 වැනි සංවත්සරය සමරයි.
එක්සත් රාජධානියේ ගාලු මිතුරු පදනම වයස අවුරුදු 20ක් සම්පූර්ණ කර ඇත. අප පදනම කඹුරුපිටිය ප්‍රදේශයේ දුප්පත් දරුවන්ට උපකාර කිරීම සඳහා 2003 දී දෙව්සිරි මහතා සහ සිරිසේන ගමගේ මහතා විසින් ආරම්භ කරන ලදී. UKFG වෙතින් ශිෂ්‍යත්වයක් ලැබූ පළමු වාසනාවන්ත හා දීප්තිමත් දරුවා උල්ලල පාසලේ G. L. රෝෂිනී කුමාරි ය. සුනාමිය ශ්‍රී ලංකාව විනාශ කළ විට, දෙව්සිරි මහතාගේ උපන් නගරය වන ගාල්ලේ සහන සේවා කටයුතු මුලින්ම ආරම්භ කළේ අපි ය.
අපි සුනාමියෙන් විපතට පත් දරුවන්ට ශිෂ්‍යත්ව රැසක් පිරිනැමූ අතර අවතැන් වූ පවුල් සඳහා ගාල්ලේ සුනාමි නිවාස හතක් ද ඉදිකළෙමු. සුනාමි ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ කටයුතු සඳහා ගාල්ලට මෙතරම් ආධාර ලැබෙන විට අපි නැවතත් කඹුරුපිටියට ගොස් එම ප්‍රදේශයේ දරුවන්ට අපගේ උපකාරය නැවත ආරම්භ කළෙමු. පසුගිය වසර 20 තුළ අපි දරුවන් 330කට ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ලබාදී තිබෙනවා. අපි අලුත් පොත් දහස් ගණනක් සමඟ නව පාසල් පුස්තකාල 5 ක් සහ බැඩ්මින්ටන් ක්‍රීඩාංගන 5 ක් පරිත්‍යාග කර ඇත්තෙමු. ඒ වගේම අපි ළමයින්ට පරිගණක 30ක්, මුද්‍රණ යන්ත්‍ර, ප්‍රොජෙක්ටර්, ලැප්ටොප්, අලුත් සපත්තු ජෝඩු 2500ක් පමණ ලබා දී තිබෙනවා. අපි මෙතෙක් කල ලොකුම පරිත්‍යාගය සපුගොඩ රතනපාල පාසලේ රුපියල් ලක්ෂ 110ක වියදමින් ඉදිකළ හෙලන් කාර්සන් පිහිනුම් තටාකයයි.
UKFG සිය 20 වන සංවත්සරය 2023 මාර්තු 30 වන දින කඹුරුපිටිය සිරිනි වලව්ව හෝටලයේදී සමරන ලද අතර, අපගේ වත්මන් ශිෂ්‍යත්වලාභීන් ඔවුන්ගේ දෙමාපියන් සහ ප්‍රදේශයේ සියලුම ප්‍රාදේශීය පාසල් විදුහල්පතිවරුන් සමඟ දිවා ආහාරය සඳහා එහි රැස්වූයේ පසුව රැස්වීමක් පැවැත්වීම සඳහාය. 2003/2005 වසරවල අපේ මුල් ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ජයග්‍රාහකයින් කිහිප දෙනෙකු දැන් වෛද්‍යවරුන්, ඉංජිනේරුවන්, ව්‍යාපාරිකයන්, ගණකාධිකාරීවරුන් සහ යුධ සහ නාවික හමුදා සාමාජිකයින් UKFG වෙත “ස්තූතියි” කියන්නට එනවා දැකීම සතුටක් විය.
ඒ අතරින් කඹුරුපිටිය ප්‍රදේශයේ එක් ගමක වත්මන් ග්‍රාමසේවක (ගමේ ප්‍රධානියා) ලෙස කටයුතු කරන අපගේ ප්‍රථම ශිෂ්‍යත්ව ලාභී G.L රෝෂිනී කුමාරි පැරණි ශිෂ්‍යත්වලාභීන් සියල්ලෝම සමාජයට වැඩදායි, ප්‍රදේශයේ ප්‍රමුඛ චරිත බවට පත්වී හේවාවිදාන සහ ගමගේ පවුලේ උදවිය මුණගැසී මූල්‍යමය වටිනාකමක් නොතකා ඔවුන්ට හොඳ අධ්‍යාපනයක් ලබා ගැනීමට උපකාර කිරීම ගැන සිය හෘදයාංගම ස්තූතිය ප්‍රකාශ කිරීම හද උණුසුම් කරවන්නක් විය.
ප්‍රණීත දිවා ආහාරයෙන් පසු රැස්වීමක් පැවැත්විණි. බොහෝ ශිෂ්‍යත්වලාභීන් රැස්ව සිටි පිරිසට විනෝදාස්වාදය ලබා දීම සඳහා මනරම් ගීත ගායනා කළ අතර සම්ප්‍රදායික නැටුම් ද ඉදිරිපත් කළහ. UKFG හි දානපතියන් දැක්වූ ත්‍යාගශීලීභාවයෙන් තම පාසලට විශාල ප්‍රතිලාභයක් ලැබුණු ආකාරය උල්ලල් පාසලේ විදුහල්පති නිශ්ශංක අබේවික්‍රම මහතා සිය කතාවේදී විස්තර කළේය. එය තම පාසලට පමණක් නොව, UKFG වෙතින් බොහෝ පරිත්‍යාග ලැබුණු ප්‍රදේශයේ තවත් පාසල් 16 කට උපකාර වූ බවත්, ඒ සියලු දෙනාටම බෙහෙවින් කෘතඥ වූ බවත් ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැහැදිලි කළේය. UKFG ට තවත් වසර ගණනාවකට පාසල්වලට උපකාර කිරීමට ලැබේවායි ඔහු දැඩි ලෙස ප්‍රාර්ථනා කළේය. 350 කට අධික අමුත්තන් UKFG වෙත අවංක කෘතඥතාව පළ කරමින් පැය හතරක ගායනය, නැටුම් සහ කථාවලින් පසු බොහෝ ප්‍රීතිමත් මතකයන් ආවර්ජනය කරමින් තම නිවෙස් බලා පිටත්ව ගියහ.
